Science Laboratory Management for Southeast Asian Secondary School Science Teacher
Rationale
The existence of science laboratory in secondary school has become an obligation to deliver a chance for students to do practical work. Practical work is an effective way of learning and reinforcing theoretical concepts in science. Teachers who make effective use of practical works often find that students learn better. Through practical work, teaching is enhanced and becomes more interesting both for the learner and the teacher.
One of the competences needed for science teachers is to engage the function of laboratory as a teaching support in reinforcing the concepts of science in secondary education. With a proper use and management of science laboratory, not only the learning goals will be fulfilled but other serious problems such as safety could also be anticipated. Therefore, in order to bring its function properly, science laboratory management is an important knowledge and skill for science teachers
Goals
To improve the laboratory management competence of science teachers in enhancing the quality of teaching-learning in secondary education.
Learning Objectives
1. To recognize laboratory materials and science equipments;
2. To understand and be able to use laboratory materials and equipment according to certain steps that can be evaluated by its cognitive comprehension and performance;
3. to maintain and repair laboratory materials and science equipments;
4. to be able to administrate materials, science equipments and organize activities in the laboratory;
5. to apply procedures and actions that will lead to an effective and efficient use of the laboratory;
6. to apply laboratory safety procedure;
7. to create a set of hands-on activities in science teaching and learning materials
Course Contents
1. Maintenance and Repair in Science Laboratory, important skills of laboratory maintenance, preventing damage to the equipments, simple techniques to repair minor damage, and hazardous of chemical substance;
2. Health and Safety in Science Laboratory, Risk assessment, potential hazard in experimental work, waste management, Health and Safety ruler and regulation, and technical work in laboratory; comprehension of the structure and physical character of sun ; explaining solar system as system; Global Warming and its anticipation;
3. Science process skill, Effective use of science equipments to improve science learning;
4. Practical Works in the Science Laboratory;
5. Designing worksheets for Science teaching-learning in laboratory;
6. Culture visit
Appreciating Sundanese cultural art performance at Saung Angklung Mang Udjo;
7. Culture Night
Culture exchange among SEAMEO countries;
8.
Action Plan
Participants are expected to design a follow-up program that will be done in the area/ schools in their respective countries in relation to the activities of the learning process of Earth and Space Sciences at the school.
Date and Venue
The training course will be conducted on 3 – 9 July 2011. The venue of the programme is in Bandung.
Target Audience/Participant
The target participant will be 30 High School Key Teachers of Science from SEAMEO member countries.
Trainers
The training course will be supported by trainers and experts from some well known universities such as Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Education University of Indonesia (UPI), Padjajaran Universities (UNPAD), and also trainers/instructor from Science Education Development and Empowerment Centre.
Requirements
A. Participant requirements:
1. Participant is a science laboratory manager;
2. Active English communication proven by minimum score of 450 for TOEFL or 5 for IELTS; and/or proven by English course certificate;
3.
Never attended any training course conducted by SEAMEO QITEP in Science before;
4.
Able to operate computer and internet with active email account;
5.
Not more than 50 years of age ;
6.
Good condition of health (proven by doctor’s recommendation);
7.
Shall not be in expectant mother condition (for female participant).
B. Course Requirements
Participant is required to bring:
1. Laboratory management documents from participant's country;
2.
Country report (teaching experience in Earth and Space Science in school);
3.
Laptop with wi-fi connection.
C. Other requirements
All participants should also bring and submit these following requirements to the Centre:
1. Letter of official endorsement (letter of assignment) from their government/school;
2.
The form of official trip (the form and fulfilling guide are attached);
3.
Photo: 3 X 4 (2 ex).
D. Miscellaneous
- Bring traditional costume for cultural night;
- Bring the local souvenir for silent auction.
